What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple measure that uses your height and weight to work out if your weight is healthy. It is widely used by doctors and health professionals around the world to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.

Standard BMI Categories

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies BMI into the following categories for adults (aged 18 and older):

  • Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
  • Normal Weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
  • Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9
  • Obesity: BMI of 30 or greater

Limitations of BMI

While BMI is a useful screening tool, it does have limitations. It does not measure body fat directly. For example:

  • Athletes or highly muscular individuals may have a high BMI (classifying them as overweight or obese) because muscle weighs more than fat, despite having very low body fat.
  • Older adults may have a normal BMI despite having lost muscle mass and gained body fat.
