What is the U.S. Navy Method?
The U.S. Navy Method is a widely used algorithm to estimate body fat percentage based on simple tape-measure circumferences. While not as exact as a DEXA scan, it provides a highly reliable estimate that is easy to track over time at home.
How to Measure Correctly
- Height: Stand straight without shoes.
- Neck: Measure below the larynx (Adam's apple) sloping slightly downward to the front. Do not flex the neck.
- Waist: Measure at the narrowest point of your abdomen (for men, typically at the navel; for women, just above the navel). Do not suck in your stomach.
- Hips (Women only): Measure at the widest point of your hips and buttocks.
Body Fat Categories (American Council on Exercise)
Your body fat percentage places you into one of the following categories:
- Essential Fat: Men 2-5%, Women 10-13%
- Athletes: Men 6-13%, Women 14-20%
- Fitness: Men 14-17%, Women 21-24%
- Average: Men 18-24%, Women 25-31%
- Obese: Men 25%+, Women 32%+
