BMR Calculator

Calculate your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) to find out how many calories your body naturally burns at rest.

Gender (Biological)

Used for the Mifflin-St Jeor physiological equation.

What is Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)?

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to accomplish its most basic (basal) life-sustaining functions. This includes breathing, circulation, nutrient processing, and cell production.

If you were to stay in bed all day and not move a single muscle, your BMR is the exact number of calories you would burn just staying alive.

The Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is widely considered by health and nutrition professionals to be the most accurate method for estimating BMR.

  • Men: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) + 5
  • Women: BMR = (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) - (5 × age in years) - 161

How to Use Your BMR

Your BMR is the baseline. To figure out your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) — how many calories you actually burn in a day when you include movement and exercise — you must multiply your BMR by an activity factor. Use our TDEE Calculator to take the next step in planning your diet for weight loss, maintenance, or muscle gain.
